A quick word about lawyer referral services. I recently heard a commercial that piqued my interest by 401-Pain. In the commercial, a non-attorney spokesperson cites the amount of members there are on the Florida bar. The individual, a woman, says there is x amount of attorneys on the Florida bar; they run commercials all day long. She used the words blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Call 401-Pain and go to our selective group of attorneys, a group of attorneys that they’ve cultivated to fit your needs. Is that true? I don’t know, but let me answer one question for you that you’re probably asking yourself. Do members of 401-Pain or Ask-Gary or any other lawyer referral service have any special skill or quality that other attorneys who are not members of 401-Pain or Ask-Gary do not possess? Absolutely not.
In fact, 401-Pain was hit by the Attorney General’s Office. They recently settled a case with them over a year and a half ago for misleading advertising. They were told to no longer do that in their advertisements. Does this conduct amount to a violation of their agreement? I don’t know. What I do know is the individual giving this advice that’s making this statement on a commercial is not an attorney. It’s a non-attorney spokesperson. It’s a person that’s reading off of a script. They’re not going to be there for you in your time of need. They can’t represent you in court. You call this number, you get a legal hotline, you get an operator on the phone that’s going to set you up with an attorney who is going to set you up with medical treatment and this is already prearranged in the network of individuals that are a part of this program.
All you have to do is pay a fee and be a member in good standing with the Florida bar to be a member of a lawyer referral service. Many of the premiere and most of the premiere attorneys statewide are not members of lawyer referral services. They don’t tell you that during the commercial. They just tell you why call all these attorneys and all the commercials are blah, blah blah, blah, blah, that’s the exact words the girl uses as if you’re just being annoyed by lawyer advertisements all day long which I know I am. We’re inundated with these advertisements. But we’re also inundated by advertisements by a lawyer referral services that are often misleading. The attorneys that are members of 401-Pain and Ask-Gary, some of them are good attorneys. I’m not here to make a generalization about them. But what I will tell you with certainty, with definitiveness is that these attorneys do not possess any special skill or quality that attorneys who are not members of these lawyer referrals services do not possess.
Do your research. Look online and see your attorney’s reviews. Call the attorney. See if they take your phone call. Ask other individuals in the community and physicians, who are the good attorneys. Compile a short list. Do your research. Don’t let somebody else tell you who you should hire in your time of need. You only get one shot. You only get one day in court. You only get one opportunity to settle your case. Take the best shot possible. You owe it to yourself. Do not trust somebody else to advise you of where to go. Ask a number of people where they would go to get some feedback. Find out if they ever had that attorney handle a case what their experiences were. Ask around and do your research online and then make a decision. Thank you.
